Founders Perspective

Mary Del Guidice, MSN, BS, RN

A Calling Shaped by 43 Years in Nursing

For 43 years, nursing has been my purpose and my privilege. I never imagined myself as a leader — I loved being a clinical nurse on the night shift and thought I would stay at the bedside forever. That changed when I met my CNO, Toni Fiore, the first nurse executive to successfully lead a hospital through the Magnet designation process. She saw potential in me long before I saw it in myself.

When a manager role opened on a Med Surg unit, Toni encouraged me to step forward. I hesitated until another leader told me not to take the job because “the staff was a bunch of brats.” I knew those nurses. They weren’t brats — they were talented clinicians who needed support, belief, and partnership. That comment lit a fire in me, and I accepted the role.

A Team That Transformed Everything

Realizing that this was the lowest performing unit in the hospital, on my first day, I gathered the team together. I shared that I had never been a leader before and would need their help. I asked if they would be willing to rebuild every aspect of our practice together. They said yes — and everything changed.

We transformed the unit from the lowest outcomes to the highest in quality, patient satisfaction, and RN satisfaction. We became one of the first single nursing units in the country to earn national recognition for patient experience. But the true magic was hearing the team shift from “We can’t do this” to “Look at what we did.”

That team changed my life

The photo shared here was taken during the extraordinary transformation — it has traveled with me to every office, every role, every chapter of my career. It reminds me daily of what is possible when leaders trust their teams and teams trust their leaders.

A Leadership Philosophy Born From Experience

That experience shaped my leadership philosophy and my calling:
Trust your team, and they will never let you down.

It also revealed a truth that has guided my calling: nurse leaders are extraordinary — yet too often overlooked, under‑supported, and expected to carry the weight of healthcare without the recognition their outcomes deserve. The literature confirms what we have lived: the investment in nurse leaders does not reflect what their scope of practice and  impact demands.

Why The Del Guidice Advisory Exists

Our commitment is to elevate the visibility, value, and voice of nurse leaders across the country — one leader, one team, one organization at a time. My greatest joy remains witnessing leaders make that same shift from doubt to triumph, from “I’m not sure” to “Look at what I did.”

It is an honor to walk beside you on your leadership journey.

With gratitude and unwavering commitment,
